âGood Lord!â Hezekiah froze into place over Malakia as the real world intruded in their idyll in a most dramatic way, shattering his concentration and sending him straight over into the bliss of completion. He lost control of himself so completely that he flopped over his lover like a netted carp struggling for breath.
Luckily, she was a good, strong woman who bore his sudden weight with aplomb, and simply held him against her breast until his shuddering capitulation finally ended. As he attempted to recover the use of his senses, he was aware of some uproar outside. He tried to ignore it, but curiosity was built into his bones. He finally succumbed to the temptation to get up and walk over to the small window.
âGoodness gracious!â He turned to Malakia, who lay back against the pillows, her bosom still heaving from their exertions. She was regarding him with what looked suspiciously like awe, which made him feel like a king. âThere are fish all over the place! I wonder if one of the fishermen broke his net?â
âNot at this time of day.â
She joined him at the window and stood on tiptoe to look out. âThere is a lot of shouting about a miracle.â
âDo you think they are referring to the fish?â
âI donât know what else it might be.â She smiled at him. âLook at them all scooping them up! Do you want to go out there and join in?â
He picked up a tress of her long, golden hair and wrapped it around his hand.
âNo, I thank you.â
She frowned. âThen would you like me to go down and fetch you some victuals? You must be parched.â
âPerhaps later.â He drew her closer. âI donât like being interrupted.â
She went still and looked into his eyes. âYou definitely finished, sir.â
âPrematurely.â He frowned. âThe commotion outside broke my concentration, and I succumbed to my pleasure far more quickly than I had intended. I am rather vexed with myself.â
âYou are?â She opened her eyes wide and stroked a lazy finger over his nipple. âIf I might say so, sir, your performance was more than adequate. In fact, I might say it was extraordinary. You definitely have hidden depths, Mr. Makepeace.â
âIâm glad you think so.â He gave her hair a gentle tug. âNow, come back to bed and let me prove it to you.â
